How Much Weed Can You Buy in Colorado

Posted by CANNASaver on Saturday, 03 September 2016 in Canna Blog

So you’re perhaps visiting colorful Colorado and you want to partake in as much cannabis smoking as humanly possible. We get it – with so many strains, terpenes, and types of marijuana products available, it’s like being a kid in a candy store. But how much weed can you buy in Colorado? Well, there seems to be a few set rules, but a lot of grey area around such rules.

Let us explain.

legal amount of weed you can buy

Buying Weed: How It Used To Be

It used to be that there were special marijuana deals you could get at marijuana dispensaries in Colorado that included an ounce of marijuana flower and a couple of grams of concentrates. These and many more of the best marijuana deals and best deals on concentrates in large quantities became a thing of the past on October 1st when new Colorado marijuana regulations went into effect that more specifically defined purchase limits by clarifying the concentrate to flower equivalency.

At the time, a gram of THC was considered a gram of THC, and tourists could only purchase up to 7 grams of it while residents in Colorado were allowed to purchase up to 28 grams of it, be it in the form of concentrates like wax and shatter, in the form of edibles, or in the form of buds.

New(ish) Marijuana Regulations for Consumers

When the new marijuana regulations went into effect on October 1st, 2016, 800 mg of edibles or 8 grams of concentrate were considered equivalent to 28 grams of marijuana flower. One gram of concentrate is now considered equivalent to an eighth of flower, while two grams is equivalent to a quarter ounce.

This meant that no longer would Colorado marijuana dispensaries be able to offer their retail customers anything close to an ounce of flower, paired with two grams of concentrates.

So, now, if you purchase two grams of concentrates, the most bud you can buy is just three quarters.

Deals on whole ounces of concentrates have changed, too. The new regulations greatly diminished the quantity of concentrate purchased in a single transaction, and no longer are recreational marijuana consumers allowed to purchase more than 8 grams of concentrates at a time without exceeding the purchase limit.

how much weed can you buy

And, with many edibles packing 200mg THC per package, a few marijuana-infused candy bars can add up to the 800mg purchase limit very quickly. If you want to mix and match with some flower or edibles or concentrates, you have to really be smart in tallying up exactly how much of what you can legally get. The biggest challenge that marijuana dispensaries face now is to come up with alternative bundle packages that include a carefully thought-out balance of flower and concentrates or edibles that will appeal to marijuana consumers while staying within the rules (although you will see different dispensaries offer certain bundle packages that maximize how much weed you can buy in Colorado at a time).

New(ish) Marijuana Regulations for Dispensaries

Other new(ish) regulations have affected the cannabis industry more than the marijuana consumer. Remember that weird label that comes on every marijuana product you buy in Colorado, that looked a bit like a sheriff's badge, only it said, “Department of Revenue” and “marijuana” on it? That became a thing of the past as a new marijuana warning label has since been adopted.

The new retail marijuana symbol features a diamond shape surrounding the word “THC” coupled with an exclamation mark. Each individually wrapped edible also contains this new icon. The new symbol for medical marijuana is virtually the same, only with an additional letter “m” to denote that it is a medical product. The new universal symbols came into use on October 1st, but there was a two-month grace period extending the compliance period until November 30th, 2016. Any establishments found selling marijuana labeled with the outdated universal symbol face serious penalties.

How Much Weed Can You Buy in Colorado Now?

The simple answer of how much weed you can buy in Colorado: Colorado residents and visitors alike may purchase up to 1 ounce (Oz) of marijuana at a time, once a day.

Medical marijuana patients are allowed up to 2 ounces (Oz) of marijuana at a time, once a day.

Possession of Marijuana in Colorado

Now, there currently isn't any system in place that actually prevents consumers from simply heading from one dispensary to another to get around the purchase limits, but the law also says that Colorado residents and visitors alike may only POSSESS up to 1 ounce at a time, while medical marijuana patients may only POSSESS up to 2 ounces at a time.

So, nothing’s stopping you from going from dispensary and dispensary and maxing out your pot purchase limit, but be ye warned – if you’re caught with the possession of more than an ounce at a time (given you’re not a medical marijuana patient), there may be a fee or civil penalty assessed. We don’t recommend doing this.

Don’t think you’re wise in leaving a dispensary with the maximum weed allowed, only to return and buy more, as they’ll have record of each transaction made. An example was made out of one of Colorado’s largest dispensaries, Sweet Leaf, after being busted for working around some of the loopholes.

If you’re driving, you can have weed in your car, but it must be under the allowed limit and must be in a sealed container. It is not allowed to consume marijuana in the car or while driving. It’s also not allowed to carry marijuana across state borders.

So, whether you’re a Colorado resident and just don’t buy weed much or you’re only visiting Colorado for a short period of time, the new laws allow you to buy a significant amount of weed. So, how much weed can you buy in Colorado? The short answer is, enough. Unless you’re smoking an ounce a day, then we have a few problems to address. If an ounce a day isn’t enough, then just come back tomorrow!

Buying Weed in Colorado

Posted by CANNASaver on Monday, 14 December 2020 in Canna Blog

Marijuana is widely available in Colorado. There are certain cities and counties which do not allow the sale of cannabis products, but you will not have to go far to find places where you can fulfill your cannabis cravings. If you’ve never done it before, buying weed in Colorado can be intimidating. What do you get? How do you know what to ask? Will I look like a noob? Don’t worry, here are a few things to know about buying weed in Colorado.

Buy weed in Colorado

Buying Legal Marijuana in Colorado

There are two types of dispensaries for buying weed in Colorado: Recreational and Medical. Many companies have dual storefronts as Colorado laws demand a separation of medical marijuana products from recreational store products.

Buying Recreational Marijuana

For recreational marijuana buying access is restricted to people over 21 years of age. If you possess a medical marijuana card you can start buying at 18 years old. For recreational marijuana, you just need your photo identification and your money and in the time it takes to get a coffee you can get an ounce from a dispensary.

Buying Medical Marijuana

By contrast, a medical marijuana card is not something you will just find on the street or come across by chance. It is a tool, available to those with medical conditions that must be obtained in steps. To obtain a medical marijuana card you must be a Colorado resident, visit a doctor, fill out the paperwork with the Colorado Department of Public Health, and wait for your approval. You will then receive approval in your email which you can print.

Then you only need your card and your cash and you are on your way to finding the best-priced weed this side of the Mississippi River.

Cannasaver has a page dedicated to this privileged segment of customers.

The Difference Between Buying Medical and Recreational Marijuana

The difference between recreational and medical marijuana is not the buds or concentrates. It is largely a difference based on price and quantities.

Colorado taxes medical marijuana at a lower rate of just the standard state tax of 2.9% while recreational marijuana is taxed at 15% in addition to the standard state tax.

The other big difference between medical and recreational marijuana legalities is the amount you can possess. A medical card carrier can possess up to 2 ounces of buds and someone who shops recreationally is only allowed up to 1 ounce.

Cannasaver has a page dedicated to helping you find the best ounce deals. You can expect to pay a low of $39 for shake and up to $200 for top-shelf nuggets. Concentrates are also available to both medical and recreational customers. The same rules apply as with buds, medical cardholders can buy and possess more concentrates legally.

The Amount of Weed You Can Buy in Colorado

Dispensaries are heavily regulated and will let you know what your max carrying and purchase limits are for the day. Once you reach your limit for the day you cannot buy from the same place until the next day. Additionally, many places will only allow one visit per day even if you don’t max out your legal allotment. Plan wisely to avoid disappointment.

Edibles, concentrates, and flower buds are all factored into the maximum purchase per day at any certain dispensary. You could max out on one of these products or select a combination of products. Your budtender during your visit will give you the best advice.

Carrying Weed in Colorado

Another legality regards the way in which you carry your goods. The law requires “sealed” packages while traveling in public with your weed. Some dispensaries will charge you a few bucks for special bags designed with fancy “childproof” locks. Other dispensaries will simply staple your bag shut and the requirement is met. It may be tempting to rip open your bag before driving home but be aware that this could invalidate the “seal”. In the event you are examined by law enforcement there could be the question about if the seal is broken.

Beware of traveling with open packages and be aware of heavy, “skunky” odors that could attract unwanted attention. In the state of Colorado, drug dogs are no longer used to detect marijuana and the smell of marijuana is not an automatic cause for the search of an automobile. Be sure that you are discrete when transporting from dispensaries to your private property to preserve your freedoms.

Weed in Public in Colorado

Consuming and driving is against the law. There are charges such as DUI for marijuana use when operating an automobile. If it is edibles or vapes or good old fashioned buds it is a requirement of the law that you do it on private property.

Although it might seem fun to get high while skiing or hiking be careful as this could be a violation of state and federal laws as many of our favorite outdoor places are considered public lands.

Carrying Weed Outside of Colorado

Unfortunately, federal law does not allow one to cross state lines with marijuana products. This also applies to flying through Denver International Airport. It is illegal, although due to the decriminalization in Colorado and the city limits of Denver extending to the airport, it is rare for arrests to occur based on possession of Marijuana. Depending on where you are going, if caught with cannabis, the local authority will determine what charges, if any, should be brought.

Reselling Weed

Another issue to be aware of is resale of marijuana is also against the law. Any sale of marijuana must be authorized by the state at a sanctioned dispensary. Not to worry about gifting your favorite stoner some buds though, as adults can still “gift” each other up to an ounce legally.

Be Responsible With Weed in Colorado

The moral of the story is that responsibility is required when dealing with the laws surrounding marijuana. Be careful, know your limits, and be responsible. There are numerous resources to explore to ensure you are aware of boundaries and laws such as CDOT’s website around drugged driving

Another great resource to consider is the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environments resources on getting a medical card.

Some activist events that cannabis lovers should consider attending to further the cause of access and decriminalization is the annual 4/20 rally in Denver civic center park. Also, consider writing your senator and house representatives to remove marijuana from the DEA schedule one drug list.

End the war on cannabis and happy highs!

Sizes and Prices of Weed

Posted by CANNASaver on Tuesday, 20 April 2021 in Canna Blog

Been a while since you’ve bought any bud? Maybe you’re new to the marijuana world or maybe you’ve been smoking straight concentrates for a while.

Either way, it’s helpful to know exactly what you’re looking for when you head to the dispensary.

There’s a lot more math involved with buying marijuana than there is with other products. You know exactly how many beers are in a six-pack or eggs are in a carton. You should also know exactly how much weed you’re getting when you purchase.

bag of weed

Traditionally, weed is measured in terms of ounces.

The most common weights you can purchase weed at are:

·         Gram

·         ⅛ (eighth)

·         ¼ (quarter ounce)

·         ½ (half-ounce)

·         Full ounce

Obviously, how long each will last is completely dependent on how often you smoke. If you don’t smoke very much, it doesn’t make much sense to buy an ounce – regardless of it being a better deal per gram.

Buying in bulk is generally always going to get you the best deal – but it doesn’t matter if the weed goes to waste. Marijuana can even go bad if left unused and stored incorrectly for too long.

While it’s firstly most important to know your smoking habits before purchasing flower, it’s also important to have some general knowledge of the sizes and prices of weed.

Gram – 1g

A gram is generally the smallest amount of flower you can buy. Remember dime bags? Depending on where you’re from and how expensive weed was there, a gram of marijuana typically cost $10. That obviously varied with quality – but the general rule of thumb was that $10 bought you a gram.

The price has stayed relatively the same since, but it does vary from dispensary to dispensary and strain to strain. Typically you’ll be paying between $6-$20 for a gram – the better quality the flower the higher the price.

A gram will usually pack about a joint or two, depending on how fat you roll them. A dispensary typically offers gram or half-gram pre-rolls – so a gram gets you roughly that.

This is going to be where you’re paying the most for your weed. It is cheap, but from a price-per-gram perspective, it’s the most expensive. It’s not until you start buying in bulk that this becomes apparent.

⅛ Eighth – 3.5g

An eighth is going to be where you see that buying in bulk can save you money. Typically an eighth can cost anywhere from $25-$60, but that can vary based on quality of the bud. Some dispensaries will even sell four-gram eighths to promote purchasing bulkier amounts.

When comparing a gram vs. an eighth, it will almost always be cheaper to buy an eighth than three and a half individual grams

Typically an eighth will give you about four to seven joints worth of weed – again, dependent completely on how much you pack. Bowl packs depend specifically on size of the bowl and how full you pack those as well.

An eighth is good for those who smoke a little bit more than occasionally, but still not too often. How long it lasts depends entirely on you – but it’s safe to say that if you smoke more often, then bigger quantities are for you.

price of weed

¼ Quarter – 7g

A quarter-ounce is for people who smoke more often. At seven grams, it’s double the size of an eighth, but not double the price. It’s cheaper to buy one quarter than two separate eighths.

Typically you’ll get about twelve to sixteen joints out of a quarter – dependent on you again. A quarter is usually going to run you somewhere between $40-$80 but can be cheaper or more expensive depending on the quality of the bud.

A quarter is good for frequent smokers, as it lasts twice as long as an eighth and has a good price point. It’s a good point between a small purchase and a larger, bulkier purchase.

½ Half-Ounce – 14g

Also known as half a zip, a half-ounce is a more serious purchase than the others. This is for a pretty serious smoker. Weighing in at fourteen grams, a half-ounce is for those who don’t want to be running out any time soon.

You’ll get – obviously – double the amount of weed you get from a quarter. So, think somewhere around two dozen joints in a half-ounce. It’ll cost you a bit more money, but this is really where buying in bulk saves in the long run.

Generally, a half-ounce will cost somewhere between $100-$120, much cheaper than buying two quarters or four eighths. Obviously, prices can get much higher or lower depending on quality.

ounce of weed

Full Ounce – 28g

In most legal states, this is the largest amount of weed you can buy at any one time. An ounce is for the serious smoker, who doesn’t miss a day and doesn’t like being low.

For a general idea on size, it’s the legal limit a person can own in Colorado. This is because of the amount – an ounce is large enough that any bigger and people will think you have intent to distribute.

An ounce is a full 28 grams – should give you somewhere near 100 joints. Depends entirely on the quality of the weed, but the price range is generally somewhere between $150-$220. Look for prices even higher than that when dealing with high-quality stuff.

Quarter-Pound – 112g

The quarter-pound is a pretty rare size of marijuana. Four times the amount of an ounce, it’s still illegal to have this much weed on your person in Colorado.

It’s hard to find anywhere to pick up a quarter-pound – but if you do, it’s going to be expensive. A quarter-pound is going to cost you somewhere around $800, but can easily be more or less depending on where you’re getting it from.

This amount of for a very serious smoker – and even then, it will take a while to go through.

Now that we’ve taken care of sizes and you know what you’re looking for, head into the dispensary and buy the perfect size for you. Check out our homepage first to make sure you’re not missing out on any killer deals.
