What Are Trichomes?

Posted by CANNASaver on Tuesday, 09 February 2021 in Canna Blog

If you’ve ever looked at a piece of cannabis bud closely, chances are you’ve seen the layer of frost-like crystals covering the leaves and stems of the flower. But just what are trichomes and what do they do?

That frost-like substance is also known as Trichomes -- they are tiny biological cannabinoid epicenters found on the flowers and leaves of cannabis plants.

They’re a treat for the weed lover’s senses as they tend to be shiny, sticky, and emit a variety of aromas depending on the strain.

The Purpose of Trichomes

Trichome is defined as “fine outgrowths or appendages on the epidermis of a plant,” and they can be observed in a variety of plant species throughout nature. Originating from the Greek word “Tríchōma,” meaning “growth of hair,” trichomes are small resin glands that look like tiny hairs with a round and bulbous tip. They range in 10 to 100 micrometers and give marijuana buds their frosty, shiny, and sticky appearance.

Protection Barrier

Trichomes serve many different functions for plants such as keeping them safe, healthy, and functional. In Cannabis, trichomes function as protection from difficult climate and outside elements such as harmful UV rays, strong winds, and fungal growth.

Trichomes also deter animals and insects away from the marijuana plant by emitting a strong aroma and bitter taste.

Cannabinoid Factories

Trichomes manufacture the hundreds of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that make each cannabis strain potent and unique. They are an essential part of the cannabis plant and without them, there wouldn’t be any THC, CBD, terpenes, or extracts for weed enthusiasts to enjoy.

Types of Trichomes

Three types of Trichomes appear most often on cannabis plants. However, it is the third group that catches the weed lover’s attention.

  1. Bulbous Trichomes

  2. Capitate sessile Trichomes

  3. Capitate-stalked trichomes

Capitate-stalked trichomes

Capitate-stalked trichomes appear in abundance around the calyxes of budding flowers. They also measure much larger than their counterparts and is visible to the naked eye. Due to their size, capitate-stalked trichomes produce the highest concentration of essential oils -- from which all your favorite oily medicinal and recreational goodies are made.

Although trichomes do produce cannabinoids, plants containing higher concentrations of trichomes don’t always produce high concentrations of cannabinoids. Factors such as UV light can impact the rate of cannabinoid and terpene synthesis. Usually, plants exposed to a broader spectrum of light will produce more cannabinoids and/ or terpenes, however, this can be strain specific.

Do Trichomes Get You High?

To simply put it, yes.

To further break it down, the compounds THCA and CBD are found within the trichomes of a cannabis plant. They are then heated and undergo a chemical reaction, producing the medicinal and psychoactive properties of your favorite strains.

During combustion, THCA is converted into THC. When you consume marijuana, THC interacts with the cannabinoid receptors found in the brain resulting in the ‘high’ feeling we get after consuming cannabis.

Concentrates & Extracts

Cannabis concentrates and extracts including hash, shatter, cannabis oil, and wax all rely on trichomes that are harvested from cannabis plants. Weed growers use a method referred to as ‘solvent extraction’ to separate cannabinoids and terpenes from their plant tissues by using solvents such as ethanol and isopropyl alcohol.

All solvents must be completely removed before cannabis extracts are safe to use.

There are other methods to collect extract without the use of solvents. Rosin, can be made by pressing dry cannabis flower between heated metal plates. While hash, on the other hand, can be made through various methods including the water/ice method and hand rolling.

Harvesting Trichomes

Most growers examine their plants with magnifying glasses, making it easier for the naked eye to see developing trichomes. Growers can also monitor the changes in their plants by analyzing their visual appearance and aroma. When it comes to harvesting trichomes, for most growers -- the denser the trichomes, the better. However, it’s really up to personal preference.

Stages of Harvest

Early harvest offers a lively, energetic type of high. During this stage, trichomes will still appear clear and colorless and their yields are not yet at their peak.

Most growers wait until the majority of their trichomes (70%) start to turn cloudy in appearance, the high from this type of harvest is more profound with increased body effects.

Some growers choose to wait until most of the trichomes start to display an amber or reddish tint. The high from late-harvested trichomes can be heavy with strong body effects. In simpler terms, this is the type of weed that will get you couch-locked stoned.

Lighting Conditions and Trichome Yield

When growing your own plants, the quality of your crop is heavily dependent on seed quality. Good quality cannabis seeds will result in a higher trichome production yield, resulting in a crop of high-quality cannabis. Environmental conditions also impact trichome levels on cannabis plants, many modern growers have switched to LED grow lights to help them cultivate the most THC from their crops.

Additionally, supplementing LED light with UVB light is another way to boost cannabis trichome production. This is a technique used by professional growers as the rate of trichome production increases as a defense to UVB radiation, so adding UVB will increase your trichome yield. UVB light can severely damage human eyes and skin, therefore it’s important to be extremely vigilant. Never look or enter any area where UVB lights are on.

With marijuana being legal in some capacity in more than half of the U.S. states, more people are leaning towards growing and harvesting their plants. To grow the best cannabis, high-quality seeds supplemented with an optimal growing environment are needed along with proper care and dedication.

Thank you, Trichomes

The magic of cannabis is found within its trichomes, they are the prime source of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that characterize the quality and ‘high’ of our favorite cannabis strains. Without trichomes, the cannabis plant wouldn’t have its amazing healing and euphoric properties.

Shatter Prices

Posted by CANNASaver on Monday, 31 January 2022 in Canna Blog

If you’ve made it through yet another long week, then a nice Shatterday may be just what you need! “What’s Shatterday?” you ask. It’s a Saturday with some concentrated cannabis deals! On “Shatterday” Saturdays you can often get great prices on concentrates!

Here, we break down shatter and shatter prices specifically.

Dabbing Concentrates

If you know your way around a dab rig, then you know that high-quality concentrates are the only way to fly. If you’re unfamiliar with dabbing, it’s not too different from using an old-school bong

The main difference is that instead of a flower-filled bowl there is a nail.

A dab nail is a metal spike. If it’s made from glass or ceramic, then it’s called a banger

The spike is heated with a hand torch.

While it is hot, a piece of concentrate is placed on the hot nail, and you inhale the vapor produced as it melts.

It’s pretty simple.

There are a number of different kinds of concentrates that can be used in a dab rig. Each has its pros and cons. There are hash oils, waxes, budders (or butters), live resin and shatter. The last one is what we want to take a closer look at.

What Is Shatter?

Some concentrates are soft and pliable, like butter and crumble. Shatter is rigid like glass. In fact, to use it, you simply break or snap off a piece. Then you place it on the heated nail, which converts it almost immediately into vapor. Breathe through the mouthpiece and inhale the concentrated cannabinoid cloud. Ta-dah!

Shatter is made with butane as a chemical agent that separates cannabinoids and terpenes from plants. You start with dried marijuana. Butane solvent is added and then evaporated through low heat. The resulting liquid is processed into a hard, brittle, amber-colored material.

That’s shatter.

The final product is pretty potent. Shatter can run about 80 percent THC content! That’s pretty high - but legal - for recreational or medical use in states such as Colorado and Washington. So if you’re in a recreational state, no worries – you can legally buy shatter. If you’re in a medical state – and have a card – then you can also get shatter. Getting yourself some of the good stuff is something that we’ll get into shortly.

Shatter can be added with weed in a pipe or regular bong bowl. It can be added to a hand-rolled joint. But most folks are gonna dab it.

How Is Shatter Sold?

Shatter is sold by the gram. That means at your favorite dispensary you can get this concentrate in lots of 1g, 2g, 4g, or even 8g. In some places, you can even buy a pound of shatter if you so desire – though that would be very expensive! There may be local limits so check before you buy in bulk.

The reason that shatter is sold by grams is the power in each puff. With high amounts of THC there’s a lot in each little bit of shatter. When you take a rip from your rig, you only need a little bit at a time. Concentrated cannabis means small amounts are plenty!

How Much Does Shatter Usually Cost?

Because of the popularity of dabbing, Shatterday specials abound. Prices on concentrates will vary depending upon the particular strain, availability, and by geographic location. 1 gram can run around $60 in a legal state like Colorado.

Saturdays are a good day for dispensaries to drive business. They do this by offering specials on concentrates. Hence Shatterday.

A usable amount of shatter doesn’t necessarily cost you an arm and a leg. Again, dispensary deals are everywhere. A little searching can go a long way! There’s nice pricing to be found, especially on the weekend!

What Kinds of Deals Does Cannasaver Have on Shatter Prices?

Since you’re here, we’re assuming you’d like to get some good Shatterday – or any day – bargains.

Well, you’ve come to the right place!

Tons of dispensaries use Cannasaver to share weed coupons. This helps you understand what you’re looking for before you go to your nearest dispensary. You don’t have to go from store to store looking for the best dabbing deals. That's because we put them all in one place for your convenience!

Bargains are searchable by strain, location, method of smoking or toking, and more! You can search coupons by quantity. Additionally, you can look for medical deals or recreational deals

Our site is frequently updated so that you can find the best deals close to you.

Here’s a smattering of some shatter steals you can find:

ALL SHATTER & WAX 2g for $24, 4g for $44 or 8g for $75!

8g Wax & Shatter for $85+Tax!

$12.95 WAX & SHATTER - MIX-N-MATCH

$38.92 (Pre-Tax) for a 4g Bucket of Kayak Wax or Shatter

Where Can You Get Good Prices on Shatter?

Medical and recreational dispensaries are the best places to get yourself some shatter. Legal states that have been doing this for a while are able to bring down prices a bit more since supply is high and demand, while still high, is attainable. Lucky for you, Colorado is one (and the first) of those states.

Word of mouth and dispensary reviews are two good ways to determine where to shop.

Couponing can also lead you to where you want to go to get some weed!

For experienced dabbing enthusiasts or beginners, affordable shatter can be found. Decent pricing is out there.

A little goes a long way, so you don’t necessarily need a lot to get the effects you’re after.

Remember – concentrates are called that for a reason. Just a tiny bit applied to a nail or topping a weed pipe will give you a good buzz!

But if you want to buy in bulk, discounts on quantity can also be had.

Once you’ve determined where to go, then all you have to do is get there.

Shatter in hand, you can then try a little at a time of whatever strain you’ve selected to see how it works for you. It isn’t rocket science, though you may go into orbit.

Buy, try, and, if you like it, then you are all set!

Enjoy your Shatterday!

Rosin Price

Rosin Price

Posted by CANNASaver on Friday, 07 April 2023 in Canna Blog

For the cannabis connoisseurs, plus the novice cannabis users, you’ve probably heard about live rosin, and how it’s become so popular.

Cannabis consumers can grow very confused, as was I when doing my research.  There is plenty of content comparing one concentrate to another, ways they are made, live versus not live, resin versus rosin, and more!

There is no need to feel overwhelmed because we will break it down for you.

Let’s start with four basic cannabis concentrates

We have resin, live resin, rosin, and live rosin – which is the emphasis of the article.  Let’s explain the differences without going into so much detail that you come away confused and not knowing what to purchase.

By the way, if you’re not sure how to smoke concentrates, don’t worry, we’ve got it covered.

Resin vs Rosin

Basic Resin (usually referred to as Resin)

Also called weed tar and/or reclaim.  I’m referring to the black tar-like substance that sits on the bottom of your water pipe, bowl, or dab rig, after smoking.  It was smoked back during the Woodstock days of the 1960s (and probably your high school days where it was a bit more difficult to get weed), but nowadays, it is rarely used.

It is hard to get “high” when consuming resin because it doesn’t contain much THC, compared to other preparations.

I do not recommend anyone smoke cannabis resin.  Because it contains ash and tar, unlike other cannabis preparations, and is, therefore, impure. There can be harmful cannabis resin side effects, such as headache, severe sore throat, and difficulty breathing.

Live Resin

Recently, live resin has gained much popularity.  It contains the word “resin” because it involves the resin extracted from the cannabis plant.  It has nothing to do with the substance described above, besides the fact that it also comes from a cannabis plant.

Live resin concentrates are produced with the use of solvents, such as ethanol, butane, and carbon dioxide.  What makes live resin different from the other concentrates such as wax and oil, is the use of freshly frozen bud during processing. The harvested bud leaves are immediately frozen and sent out for processing; thus, they are sometimes referred to as “fresh frozen flowers.”

Using this fresh frozen flower enables the product to retain more of the terpenes, compared to other hydrocarbon extracts that use dried and processed cannabis.  Terpenes, also referred to as terpenoids and terps, are the naturally occurring chemical compounds that make certain strains of cannabis smell or taste different from others.  It essentially gives the cannabis strain its aroma and scent.  Since more of the terpenes are retained, it creates a much more pleasurable user experience, compared to the other hydrocarbon-based oils/waxes.

What is Rosin?

Rosin is a cannabis concentrate made through a heat and pressure extraction process. This process separates the resinous sap from the plant material, resulting in a potent, terpene-rich product. Unlike other concentrates like BHO or CO2 extracts, rosin does not use any solvents in its production, making it a preferred choice for health-conscious consumers.

Rosin has steadily gained popularity in the cannabis industry for its solventless extraction process that maintains the plant's rich terpene and cannabinoid profile. As the demand for clean, potent, and flavorful cannabis concentrates continues to rise, understanding the factors that influence the price of roin is essential. This article will provide you with all the information you need to know about rosin prices and what to expect when purchasing this sought-after product.

Rosin & Live Rosin

There are two types of rosin: rosin and live rosin.

Rosin and live rosin differ from live resin, and other concentrates such as wax/oils, in that they are solvent-less concentrates.  This means that rosin is a natural and pure concentrate, produced using heat and pressure, instead of hydrocarbons (solvents) used in resin and other waxes/oils.

So how do rosin and live rosin differ?  Live rosin, like live resin but unlike regular rosin, uses fresh frozen flower (bud).  The other versions, that are not live, use flower that is dried and processed.

So, as you can see above, there are differences among the four types.  For the purposes of this paper, we will stick to our discussion of live rosin.

So, if you’re still with me I’ll summarize: waxes, oils, and live resin use chemicals to produce the extract.  Rosin is more natural, in that no chemicals are used to produce the extract.  When we see the word “live,” we know that fresh frozen bud was used to make the extract.

The Popularity of Live Rosin

Live rosin is well known as the “top-shelf” concentrate available, due to its potent aromas.  There are also many positives, such as being safer to produce (since there are no solvents involved), higher potency, and already mentioned, more aroma for the user.

Since there are no chemicals in live rosin, there are many ways it can be consumed, such as with edibles, water pipes, vaporizers, etc.

Since live flowers are used, some consumers claim to experience the marvelous aroma and flavors, that were present at harvest.

Live rosin also contains more terpenes than live resin, since there is no chemical extraction.

So, why would you pick live rosin over live resin, if both are using fresh frozen flowers?  The answer is that since chemicals are not used on the live rosin, it is a more natural concentrate.  If you’ve noticed the trend anywhere you go, especially in supermarkets, everyone wants products and produce labeled “fresh” or “no chemicals added.”  From the surging popularity of organic food, which is made naturally, to the continued popularity of American Spirit cigarettes, which have no added chemicals, there is a remarkable consumer trend for something that feels more fresh, natural, and wholesome.

Consider the analogy that live rosin is to live resin, as organic food is to regular food that uses chemicals.  Given the trend that everyone wants what is natural, we can see the popularity of live rosin.

With such high demand, live rosin tends to be more expensive than live resin.

What are the prices of live resin?

Well, it varies, but the general prices are listed below.

Rosin Prices

Live resin is sold for $50 to $120 per gram (gm) and can be purchased in 1 gm or ½ gm containers.

Rosin and Live rosin also range from $50 to $120 per gm, but it tends to generally be more expensive than live resin.

It is sold in ½ gm, 1gm, and even up to 8 gm at once – see the rosin specials on our website.

These prices, for live rosin and live resin, are much more compared to the $10 to $20 for basic wax and shatter (a cannabis extract that has a translucent appearance, as if it could be “shattered” like glass).

Factors That Influence Rosin Price

There are a few things that go into the price of rosin.

Quality of Starting Material

The quality of the cannabis used in the production of rosin significantly influences its price. High-quality, organically grown cannabis often yields rosin with superior flavor, potency, and overall quality, leading to a higher price tag.

Production Process

The process of making rosin is labor-intensive and requires a level of expertise to ensure the best possible outcome. The heat and pressure need to be carefully controlled to avoid burning the product or losing precious terpenes. This careful production process can contribute to the cost of rosin.

Yield

The yield from the rosin extraction process is typically lower than that of solvent-based extraction methods. A lower yield can result in a higher price per gram, as more plant material is required to produce the same amount of product.

Market Demand

Like any product, the price of rosin is influenced by supply and demand. As the demand for solventless, high-quality concentrates continues to rise, you can expect rosin prices to reflect this trend.

What to Expect When Purchasing Rosin

Given these factors, rosin tends to be one of the more expensive cannabis concentrates on the market. As of my last update in September 2021, you could expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $100 per gram of rosin, depending on the quality and the region. Remember, cannabis prices can fluctuate and vary greatly based on location, so it's always a good idea to check with local dispensaries or delivery services for the most accurate and up-to-date pricing.

While rosin may come with a higher price tag compared to other concentrates, many consumers find the clean, potent, and full-flavored experience it provides to be worth the extra cost.

When purchasing rosin, it's essential to consider not only the price but also the quality of the product. Look for rosin that is transparent, has a sappy or buttery consistency, and comes from a reputable source. A higher price often indicates higher quality, but that's not always the case, so it's crucial to do your research and ask questions.

Wax Strains

Wax Strains

Posted by CANNASaver on Saturday, 06 February 2021 in Canna Blog

For those about to dab, we salute you.

Concentrates are definitely fun for veteran smokers. Concentrates such as wax were made for a modern stoner wanting smoking potency and efficiency. Cannabis concentrates often hit between 60-80% in THC potency, sometimes hitting higher numbers.
With an onset time of 1-3 minutes, the effects can last a few hours. Concentrates maintain the terpenes from the marijuana plant thus adding to the overall cannabinoids being absorbed, natural taste involved, and controlling your overall high.

But which wax strains are best when considering concentrates to dab or produce from? We’re so very glad you asked.

How To Choose Wax Strains

Marijuana strains with a wide spectrum of compounds and good flavor/aroma are typically chosen for high-quality cannabis concentrate. Dispensary extraction specialists prefer to use strains producing a mass amount of trichomes (kief). But best strains are often subjective. So here’s a list of a mixture of Sativa, Indica, and hybrid concentrates that are guaranteed to be making you feel good.

Grape Ape

One of the rare purple strains, Grape Ape is an often sought-out Indica strain. Grape Ape is a much beloved and popular strain with some to do with its legendary Grand Daddy Purp and Afghani lineage.

The strain in its wax form hits high potencies much like its flower form. The wax can reach between 70-80+% THC. Grape Ape is also a fast grower, only taking between 7-8 weeks to flower. This can lead to more wax being produced.
The grape Ape concentrate has a grape-like smell and flavor. The strain provides pain-relief and is a great sleepy time high.

Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express in its wax form will, simply put, make your day better. As Saul from the movie, Pineapple Express (2008) once said, “It’s hands down the dopest dope I’ve ever smoked.”

The one and only satisfying Sativa is a cross between Trainwreck and Hawaiian. The strain, in its concentrated form, astonished with thrilling smells; comparable to an apple or mango. How yummy does that sound? The taste is as close to pineapple, pine, and cedar as you can get.

Pineapple Express wax gifts you with a long-lasting, energetic high while heightening the senses to their absolute fullest. The concentrate provides productivity and creativity to flow and flow. “It’s almost a shame to smoke it. It’s like killing a unicorn, with like, a bomb”.

Wedding Cake

Don’t worry, we don’t have to sit at a wedding for this one. Wedding Cake is one of the newest crowd favorites on this wax list. The strain is a hybrid. It’s a cross between Cherry Pie and Girl Scout Cookies.

Wedding Cake concentrate is very potent, anywhere between 80-90%. With vanilla smells and berry taste, the strain provides long-lasting euphoria and happiness. It provides pain relief, reduces insomnia, and helps with appetite.

Green Crack

Though sometimes an off-putting name, Green Crack is a Sativa fan’s best friend. Not letting the name fool you, this Sativa is 100% energizing marijuana and delectable flavor, especially in wax form. The strain has a fast 7-8 week flowering time which is always nice with production. Outdoor grows can reach up to 20 ounces per plant.

Green Crack wax is the definition of pure energy. Green Crack wax has a super surge of cerebral ripples and sharpened focus. The concentrate has mouth-watering fruity/mango flavors and smells potent enough to blast you into space.

Green Crack wax is a great daytime concentrate which aids in the fight against fatigue and stress. We think we could all use a little of that these days.

Harlequin

For those with a need for a CBD-rich strain, Harlequin is the gal for you. This strain is a high yield producer. With a 2:1 THC: CBD ratio, Harlequin provides a flavorful and balanced wax.

Harlequin is low on THC potency but very high in CBD. With some THC present, you can still get a little THC high but it's more there to interact with the CBD (entourage effect).

Harlequin concentrate has aromas of cherry, pepper, with a slight earthiness. Medicinal users often use it for pain, inflammation, and muscle spasms.

Chemdawg

Ah, Chemdawg. This beautiful strain is a classic. It’s continually crossed to create some of the best strains around today. With a good yield, Chemdawg was basically made for concentrate production.

Enhanced Diesel scents spread throughout the room when the strain became an extract. It has an orange and earthy taste to it. Chemdawg also drips in the terpene caryophyllene which gives the concentrate some spice.

The terpene also provides the benefits of being an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anxiety/depression reducer.

Chemdawg is a well-known, euphoric strain; only enhanced through concentrate.

Sour Diesel

Incredibly popular, Sour Diesel is a 90% Sativa dominant strain with effects that are only enhanced through the concentrate process. Sour Diesel is a cross of Chemdawg and Super Skunk, making for one heck of a great smell. Sour Diesel flower can be produced as quickly as 11 weeks.

Sour Diesel concentrates are typically full of citrus flavor and gassy smells. Really gassy!

This fast-acting Sativa is great for an all-day bake of creativity and energy. Sour diesel is a long-lasting concentrate that will leave you happy, stress-free, and relieving any pain you may have.

OG Kush

Now if we may, I’d like to introduce a strain that needs no introduction really, the legendary OG Kush. OG Kush is a 75% Indica, 25% Sativa hybrid strain. With medium to large dense buds, OG Kush is perfect for making concentrates.

The concentrate packs high potency without ever feeling overly intense. OG Kush has very earthy smells with rich citrus, pine, and faint fruit flavors.

OG Kush is great for the end of the day. Perfect for relaxing your body, surrounding you in calm, and leaves a smile on your face.

Strawberry Banana

For me, taste and flavor are the number one factors I’ll choose a certain kind of wax/concentrate. That said, for those who value flavor in dabbing we bring to you, Strawberry Banana. This Indica heavy concentrate is rich in trichome/resin production. Also being a cross between Bubblegum and Banana Kush, this strain is the perfect candidate for a premiere cannabis concentrate.

Strawberry Banana has vibrant aromas of strawberry, banana, and other tropical fruits. The flavor follows suit, often being compared to the taste of a fruit smoothie. Yum!

Strawberry Banana provides a dreamlike head high, inducing creativity and sensory awareness. Sometimes even providing a slightly psychedelic experience. A lovely concentrate indeed.

Sweet Sweet

Speaking of such sweetness, we now bring to you a great strain of that “good good,” Sweet Sweet. This strain mirrors Strawberry Banana but for the Sativa lovers out there. The strain is high-yielding while producing beautiful trichomes. Perfect concentrate fit!

Sweet Sweet has a bubble gum aroma with tropical fruit flavors. It provides an energized and euphoric high that lasts for a long time.

Concentrates of Sweet Sweet can help combat headaches/migraines and drastically reduce stress.
So now we hope we’ve helped you select the best concentrate strains for you.

Check out Cannasaver for the best concentrate deals out there. Select wisely and based on what kind of high will suit you best.

BHO vs CO2

Posted by CANNASaver on Friday, 18 February 2022 in Canna Blog

Cannabis concentrates and extracts give great benefits! The theory is more is better. Increased cannabinoids in concentrates and extracts mean more relief for medical users. For recreational smokers and tokers, the highs are often stratospheric!

Concentrates and extracts are created by removing oils from plants. The terms are often used interchangeably but are somewhat different. Concentrates are sometimes processed by mechanical pressing. Extracts are always made by separating the cannabinoids out using solvents. Then these extracts can be used to create concentrates.

There are a couple of ways to chemically isolate cannabinoids. Both methods have their plusses and minuses. One way is to make butane hash oil, commonly called BHO. This uses butane as a solvent. The other method utilizes carbon dioxide for extraction.

Once you separate out cannabis oil, it can be used to fill vaporizer cartridges. Or you can make wax solids. Waxes can be wax itself, obviously, or crumble, butter (also called budder), shatter, and live resin. Extracts can be tinctures or RSO.

Let’s delve deeper into the differences between the two extraction methods. Then we’ll discuss getting great deals on BHO and CO2 products.

What is BHO?

BHO production utilizes butane. Butane is a liquid fuel or accelerant. It’s a byproduct of natural gas. Butane is easily obtained. Many stores carry it. After all, it is what makes lighters light and torches flame. If you’ve ever barbecued, you’ve likely used it on your charcoal to help the coals light and burn.

When processing cannabis, butane is first refrigerated so that it is cold. Then it must pass through plant matter to release trichomes. After that, the solvent is removed from the mix of plant and chemical agents. To do this, heat is applied to evaporate the solvent. Cooling then condenses the vapor back into a liquid. What’s left is BHO.

Manufacturers use processed BHO to make the varieties of concentrate we listed before. So, how then do you consume concentrates?

Dabbing is the most popular method to enjoy BHO. You just place shatter, wax, or whatever on the nail of a dab rig. A dab rig is a modified bong with a nail or banger instead of a bowl. The nail is preheated with a butane torch. The hot nail vaporizes the solid and then you breathe in the hot gas. Vape pens or other vape devices can also be used to smoke BHO. Further, a small piece of the wax can be placed in a pipe along with some leaf or rolled up in a joint.

That’s the skinny on butane as a solvent. What about CO2 extraction then? How is it different?

What is CO2?

CO2 is carbon dioxide. It’s a gas that’s in our atmosphere. You exhale it when you breathe. Consequently, it’s everywhere.

In the extraction process, supercritical CO2 removes the trichomes from plants. This happens as temperature and pressure are adjusted to high levels. Supercritical means that the CO2 is balanced between its gas and liquid states. Specialized equipment is available to utilize CO2 in this manner. Inside these machines, fluid CO2 passes through the plant matter. This separates out the cannabinoids. Then in another chamber, the fluid becomes CO2 gas again. The gas is reusable time after time.

At the end of the procedure, the distilled cannabinoids are removed from the equipment. They can then be made into various concentrates just like with butane. The products made with CO2 are also smoked or dabbed in the same way.

CO2 extractors can be purchased online or at specialty stores. They can be expensive. If you want to make a lot of cannabis concentrates, it might be worth the financial investment.

So, which way should you go if you want to buy or make waxes?

Which is Better, BHO or CO2?

Both BHO and CO2 processing will produce similar results. Which is preferable? That will depend upon your budget and your concern over working with butane. As mentioned before, butane and its fumes are flammable. That’s a danger that would be wise to keep in mind. Yet the startup cost for CO2 extraction is higher. These are things to think about when deciding which method is preferable.

There are methods, like pressing hash, that don’t use either of these methods. Hash is a concentrate made by compression of plant matter. That’s something else to consider.

Let’s delve into the differences between the two chemical extraction processes.

Pros and Cons of BHO vs CO2

Soaking plant material in butane is a very popular method of creating concentrates. Wide availability means butane is fairly inexpensive. Therefore, products made with BHO tend to be less costly at dispensaries. And often you can get some good deals on BHO products – like here on Cannasaver!

With BHO you can get THC levels of up to 90%! Unlike other methods, like soaking in alcohol, there’s no residual plant matter.

There are downsides to using butane to extract cannabinoids. It’s really flammable. An accumulation of vapors could result in an explosion or fire. There is also concern about products containing leftover amounts of the chemical solvent. You don’t want to be sucking unnatural fumes into your lungs.
Those are the upsides and downsides of butane.

CO2 processing requires specialized equipment. That’s an investment of money at the get-go. However, CO2 is recyclable, so the cost over time does go down. Using specialized equipment does sometimes require learning about it or being trained.

CO2 leaves no residue in the final product.

When purchasing products made via either method, the biggest concern is residual butane. Some people prefer hemp wicks when lighting even a bowl of cannabis leaf. That's because of concern over butane fumes. Something to think about.

Before we go, let’s look at some super deals on concentrates made using both extraction processes.

Best Concentrates in Colorado

Posted by CANNASaver on Wednesday, 27 January 2021 in Canna Blog

Sometimes flower just doesn’t cut it. Maybe you’ve built up a tolerance, or maybe you’re just looking for a better high. Good thing for concentrates. These are the best concentrates in Denver.

What are Concentrates?

Whether you're a first-time or experienced dabber, you might still be wondering exactly what concentrates are. Deciding what concentrate to choose and knowing how to use it properly takes a little background knowledge.

Concentrates are where you isolate the most desirable parts of the cannabis plant through a process of heat and extraction. Basically, concentrates are the best part of marijuana in a convenient package. Scientifically, it’s a bit more complicated. Suffice it to say concentrates will get you higher than the average flower.

Types of Concentrates

Concentrates come in a variety of forms:

·         Live Resin

·         Shatter

·         Wax

·         Budder

·         Crystalline (Diamonds)

Though there are many different types of concentrates, they are essentially all the same product—extracted, compounded marijuana oils. They are named differently based on the consistency, density, and texture of the end product, as well as differences in how the concentrates are prepared.

How are Concentrates Used?

Some concentrates can be used topically or taken orally, while others are used in a vaporizer commonly known as a vape pen. Dabbing is also popular. This is the process of heating up a small amount of concentrate such as live resin with a device called a dab rig, and inhaling the vapors.

Think heating up a drop of hash on a penknife and breathing in the smoke—same basic concept, only now you can buy an actual factory-made contraption for this. Concentrates can also be cooked into edibles, or you can go the old-fashioned route and top off a bowl of ordinary flower to give it an extra kick.

Live Resin

Live resin is simply cannabis oil that has been extracted from fresh flowers that have been freeze-dried rather than air-dried and cured the typical way. This produces a different flavor in the resin, imparting a more aromatic and floral bouquet. Live resin is usually somewhat gooey in consistency and typically has a higher terpene content.

Shatter

Shatter is heat extracted or chemically extracted cannabis oil that has hardened into a glasslike substance that's usually amber colored and mostly transparent. When it's heated, it becomes a viscous liquid similar to thickened honey. Shatter can be relatively inexpensive, with deals as low as 15 dollars a gram.

Wax

Wax refers to concentrated marijuana oil that has been extracted--often with butane or other chemicals—to produce a thick, oily, and wax-like substance that can be smoked or vaporized. Unlike shatter which is see-through and hard, wax is soft and opaque.

Budder

Like the other concentrates, budder is extracted from flower to make a more potent product. Unlike wax or shatter, budder has the consistency of, well, butter. It’s a type of hash oil that can be up to 70 percent THC.

Crystalline

Also known as dust or diamonds, crystalline is concentrated THCA that comes in a solid form. Think kief. Crystalline often has little flavor because of the relatively low amount of terpenes but makes up for that lack of potency.

The Best of the Best Concentrates

Colorado is home to some of the best, award-winning concentrate companies in America. Recreational weed use has been legal in Colorado since 2012, allowing local businesses to branch out and perfect their extraction techniques. The use of concentrates by stoners continues to grow as time goes by.

Here are some extraction experts that make some of the best concentrates you can find in Colorado:

·         Green Dot Labs, based in Boulder, makes some of the best live resin in Colorado. Deals on their live resin can be found here.

·         Sano Gardens, based in Commerce City, specializes in cannabis extraction. Their live resin is popular among Coloradoans.

·         710 Labs makes some of the best concentrates for both Colorado and California.

·         VIOLA is a marijuana company started by former NBA player Al Harrington. Their concentrates can be found in dispensaries across Colorado.

·         Nomad Extracts make their concentrates from Colorado-grown cannabis. They’ve won awards for both their wax and shatter, among others. You can find their platinum wax for 30 dollars a gram at dispensaries in the Denver-metro area.

·         Lazercat Cannabis are Colorado-based growers and extractors. Their live rosin is a premium concentrate.

·         Kush Masters is an extraction company “nested in a log cabin next to Boulder’s Flatiron mountains.” You can get eight grams of their wax for 120 dollars in Denver.

Where to Find Concentrates in Colorado

Most local dispensaries will have plenty of choices when it comes to concentrates. A budtender is always willing to help or answer any questions one might have. We’ve put together a list of some Colorado dispensaries that have great deals on concentrates:

·         The Lodge Cannabis has locations on Federal Blvd and High Street. There’s currently a deal for two grams of Green Dot live resin for 90 dollars or four grams of wax for 70 dollars.

·         Pure Marijuana Dispensary has five locations across the Denver-metro area. You can find deals on cartridges, wax, and shatter (among many others) at any location.

·         The Stone Dispensary, located in Denver, has a wide variety of concentrate deals for the frugal stoner. The previously-mentioned Kush Masters live resin is 24 dollars OTD per gram. There’s also a deal on all brands of wax or shatter.

·         Mary Jane’s House is located on Quentin Street just a little outside of Denver. They have deals on wax right now for just 27 dollars for two grams.

Which Concentrate is Right for Me?

The first time trying concentrates can be confusing. There are a ton of choices, but only you are going to know which is best for you. Trial and error, so to speak. No shame in trying them all.

Looking for More?

There are tons of places to buy concentrates or other marijuana products in Colorado. Cannasaver can be a fantastic tool for finding the right wax, live resin, or any other concentrate for you.

Budder vs Shatter

Posted by CANNASaver on Thursday, 03 June 2021 in Canna Blog

Budder and shatter are both forms of cannabis concentrates. Budder and Shatter are two common concentrates, but others include live resin, wax, or sap.

Cannabis concentrates are made by chemically extracting the beneficial cannabis compounds from the marijuana flower, like the cannabinoids and terpenes. As such, they tend to have much higher THC concentrations (anywhere from 80% to 100% THC) than traditional marijuana, which hovers around 15% to 20% THC depending on the strain. Essentially, cannabis concentrates are a pure, isolated form of all the great stuff within marijuana.

The high THC concentration also means that you have to smoke a lot less product to get the beneficial effects, which can be better for your wallet and your overall health in the long run.

Concentrate Extraction Methods

Extraction methods for cannabis concentrates vary, however they can generally be grouped into 2 major umbrellas: solvent-based and non-solvent-based.

Thinking back to high-school chemistry, a solvent is a substance or chemical that will dissolve a solid, leaving a liquid solution. In the cannabis world, common solvents used to create concentrates are butane, propane, carbon dioxide, or alcohol

On the other hand, solventless extraction techniques, of which there are many, do not rely on any solvent. As a result, the final product is extremely pure, and many users report enjoying solventless concentrates more. However, these products tend to be much more expensive, and both major extraction methods have been studied extensively to ensure they’re both safe to the user.

What is Shatter?

Shatter is one of the most popular forms of cannabis concentrate. It is traditionally made using butane as a solvent to separate a marijuana plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes from the actual plant. From there, the extracted chemicals are processed into a hard, brittle, amber-color material that is known as Shatter. Shatter gets its name from the fact that it is easily breakable. Shatter concentrates have extremely high THC amounts that vary depending on cannabis strains used and extraction techniques, but generally are at least 85% THC.

What is Budder?

Budder, often also called wax, is another form of cannabis concentrate. It is also traditionally made with butane as a solvent. However, unlike Shatter, which is hard and brittle, Budder, in its final form, has a softer and creamier consistency. This means that Budder can be much easier to work with than harder forms of cannabis concentrate. However, since it's a softer material, Budder degrades more quickly and loses its potency faster than harder concentrates.

Budder vs Shatter

Similarities

Budder and Shatter share a lot of key similarities. Both are traditionally made by using butane as a solvent and therefore fall under the umbrella of being called a butane hash oil (BHO).

Additionally, both budder and shatter have extremely high THC concentrations. They also generally tend to cost the same amount and are much more cost-efficient than compared to traditional marijuana.

Right now through Cannasaver, you can get 4 grams of budder and/or shatter for only $38 at any Golden Meds dispensary in Colorado.

In comparison, to get the same amount of THC from traditional flower, you’d be looking at buying ¾ oz, which will cost close to double.

Differences

There are a few key differences when comparing budder vs. shatter.

For one, shatter is a much harder, brittle material than budder, which is traditionally softer and creamier.

Additionally, many people find shatter more visually appealing than budder, since Shatter is a shinier amber, whereas budder tends to be a duller color.

Lastly, Shatter will keep its potency longer than Budder. Since Budder is a softer material, it isn’t as stable as harder concentrates and will degrade more quickly.

Shatter can keep its potency for months and even years, whereas you will want to use your budder more quickly.

How to Consume Budder vs. Shatter

There are a plethora of different ways that you can consume budder and shatter. A very common way is to use a dab rig or other vaporizing device.

If you prefer, you can also break off pieces of budder or shatter to put inside a joint or blunt when smoking.

Lastly, you can also use budder and shatter inside edibles, if that’s your preferred way of consuming marijuana.

Popularity

Both budder and shatter have been growing in popularity recently for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, with recreational marijuana being legalized in more states every year, the market for all things cannabis will continue to grow.

Additionally, cannabis extracts have been growing in popularity when compared to traditional marijuana. When smoked, budder and shatter have a much more muted smell than traditional marijuana, which lends well to users who prefer to partake in the comfort of their own homes.

There’s also a growing school of thought that concentrates are “healthier” than traditional flower. Not only do you have to smoke less to receive the beneficial effects, which can be good for those with sensitive lungs, but you are smoking pure THC, CBD, and terpenes.

Lastly, since concentrates are generally cheaper and keep their potency longer than traditional flower, they are a great choice for the budget-conscious cannabis user.

Price Differences & Deals

Both budder, often also called wax, and shatter will generally cost you about the same amount.

As such, there’s no real price difference between the two, and whichever type you pick is simply down to personal preference.

Per gram, you’ll generally be looking to spend between $20 and $30, with a lower per-gram price the more you buy. Some people like budder more because it’s softer and more forgiving, whereas others may prefer shatter because of its long shelf life and beautiful amber color.

No matter whether you’re looking into trying budder or shatter out for the first time or are a seasoned user, Cannasaver has partnered with dispensaries to offer you great deals.

One deal that’s particularly great for someone just looking to get started is a $12.95 gram of either Budder or Shatter at all Pure Dispensaries in Colorado.

If you’re a more seasoned user, you might be interested in 8 grams of top-shelf wax or shatter for $99 at The Lodge Cannabis in Denver.

No matter whether you’re interested in budder, shatter, edibles, pre-rolls, or pure flower, Cannasaver is sure to offer fantastic deals for everyone.

Propane Hash Oil

Posted by CANNASaver on Saturday, 28 August 2021 in Canna Blog

We sure love our marijuana concentrates. Cannabis concentrates are a huge staple in the marijuana industry. With marijuana consumption increasing around the country, more people are either aware of “dabbing/dabs” or are currently hitting one.

Marijuana concentrates are made using a variety of marijuana extraction methods.

Solvents such as butane, CO2, and propane are used to extract desired compounds from marijuana flower.

Concentrates come in several different forms, but today, we’re going to look at my favorite kind of concentrate known as Propane Hash Oil (PHO).

Propane’s interesting chemical make-up gives this kind of hash oil potential for maintaining terpene compounds found in the trichomes

Let’s look at PHO a little closer (no, not the Vietnamese soup – although that sounds nice, too)...

Clean Burning Propane: What is Propane Hash Oil?

If we’re anything like Hank Hill, we love our “propane and propane accessories.”

Marijuana extracted through propane as the main solvent during the extraction process is called Propane Hash Oil or PHO for short.

PHO is recognizable by its bright yellow color and is often known as “honey.”

It also tends to have a “buddery” consistency.

PHO is made using only propane as a solvent.

Propane’s extremely low boiling point, -43.6ºF, allows extraction specialists to separate more of the terpenes during the concentrate extraction.

It also removes more of the solvent in the end.

PHO is consumed in a variety of ways: oil rigs, pens, or even joints

PHO vs. BHO: What is the Difference?

Are you a BHO or PHO kind of person?

What’s the difference?

Well…

One big difference between PHO and BHO (Butane Hash Oil) is consistency

PHO more often than not will have a buddery consistency (softer) whereas BHO will more likely have a shatter consistency (glasslike, brittle).

Another difference between the two is the boiling point. Propane has a lower boiling point (43.6º F) than butane (32º F) which means little heat is needed to purge the solvent.

This temperature difference affects the consistency of the concentrate and makes it much richer in terpenes.

Propane hash oil is also known for having fewer residual solvents in the concentrate.

This is a HUGE deal.

PHO Safety

With concentrates, there is always a risk of a gas leak that could spark and cause an explosion.

PHO extraction tends to be a safer means for companies to operate in a licensed facility. Closed-loop extraction systems ensure propane doesn’t leak.

How To Smoke PHO

Unlike smoking a bowl, you are going to need a specific set of tools. Tools that will make any wax concentrate cower in fear of you.

The Tools Needed:

  • A dab rig - A small, bong-like smoking apparatus

  • Nectar collector - A straw-like smoking device

  • Vape Pen - Concentrate vaporizer

When using a Nectar Collector, specifically designed trays/dishes are a must.

These kinds of products are made out of glass, quartz, or silicone.

After putting a small dab onto the container, blowtorch the tip of the collector.

While heated, drag the hot nail across the wax while sucking through the mouthpiece.
