The Savvy Stoner: Which Celebrity Marijuana brand is best? Willie Nelson vs Snoop Dogg
World-famous country music star Willie Nelson is finally rolling out his long-rumored marijuana brand Willie's Reserve, and it will soon be available at recreational dispensaries and medical dispensaries in Colorado as well as Washington. Savvy stoners want to know how Willie's weed will measure up to other celebrity endorsed cannabis brands such as Leafs by Snoop, created by the legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. Both Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg are icons in the world of cannabis culture, each outspoken and passionate about their love of the sacred herb. These two are definitely trustworthy judges of what constitutes top quality marijuana, but do their brands truly reflect this? And which celebrity has the better weed? Here's what we know so far about the battle of the buds, Willie vs. Snoop edition.
Willie's Reserve will be available at dispensaries in Washington state this month, and at Colorado dispensaries in August. Willie's Reserve is cannabis grown locally in the states where it is sold, by established, licensed independent growers selected by Willie and his team. While the full list of strains that will be featured in the Willie's Reserve line is as yet unknown, we do know that their will be several different strains available, including some long-time favorites amongst pot enthusiasts. The Willie's Reserve website product page features images of packaging labeled NYC Diesel, Blue Dream, Master Kush, Green Crack, Granddaddy Purple, Green Cush, and White Widow.
Reportedly, new strains are being developed and different cultivation methods are being tested, with Willie himself making the ultimate choices as to which strains will be included in the Willie's Reserve line. Press materials from Willie's Reserve state only that “Nelson has consulted with horticulturalists and cannabis farmers to assure any product labeled Willie’s Reserve will maintain a standard worthy of his name,” but no specific details of those standards have been released.
The weed will be sold in flower form in pre-weighed, pre-packaged 1-gram pouches, and cans that look like snuff cans that are measured out to eighths and quarter-ounces. There will also be pre-rolled joints available in both smaller ½ gram and larger 1 gram sizes. Willie's Reserve will also include concentrates, with a disposable vape pen and vape pen cartridges of CO2 extracted cannabis oil. There will be an indica, a sativa, and a hybrid concentrate: Blue Dream, NYC Diesel, and Master Kush are among the offerings. Exactly which dispensaries in Colorado will be offering Willie's Reserve has yet to be announced, and it's unclear whether earlier talk of Willie possibly opening up his own Willie's Reserve pot shops will come to pass, or if the products will be sold only at existing dispensaries. At the South by Southwest music festival in 2015 when the new brand was officially announced, Willie said they would be opening up their own storefront locations in Colorado and Washington, but as of now, no new storefronts have been announced in either state, and a list of dispensaries in Washington where the product line will be available includes only existing, already established dispensaries.
So is Willie's Reserve any good? That remains to be seen as it becomes available and consumers in Washington and Colorado can enjoy a smoke and test it for themselves.
Leafs by Snoop:
Leafs by Snoopis the line of marijuana products curated by world-famous rapper and marijuana advocate Snoop Dogg. It's been available at recreational dispensaries and medical dispensaries in Colorado since November 2015, and reviews have so far been pretty solid. The Leafs by Snoop line includes flower, edibles, and concentrates that feature eight different strains, three satia-dominant hybrids, four indica-dominant hybrids, and one high CBD strain. Strains include Tangerine Man, Cali Kush, Lemon Pie, Northern Lights, Purple Bush, Bananas, Blueberry Dream, and 3d CBD. Tangerine Man seems to be one of the best of the bunch, receiving strong reviews on Leafly . Cali Kush is also a definite winner, receiving an A++ rating on Medical Marijuana Strains. Snoop's Blue Dream, however, isn't anything to write home about. The Cannabist ranked it low on smell, flavor, and effect, dubbing it the worst in the Leafs by Snoop product line.
While only a side-by-side comparison of Willie's Reserve Blue Dream and Leafs by Snoop Blue Dream will answer definitively which celebrity's weed is better, with favorite strains like Green Crack and White Widow, Willie will be hard to beat once he throws his hat into the ring and his products finally become available. However, with Snoop Dogg appealing more to a younger audience, it may be that the marijuana market share will be divided with the younger crowd preferring Leafs by Snoop, and the old-timers preferring Willie's Reserve. Only time and a good smoke out will tell.
