Cannabis Topicals

Posted by CANNASaver on Monday, 08 March 2021 in Canna Blog

You might be familiar with the traditional types of consuming cannabis such as smoking, vaping, and eating. But did you know that you could also reap the medicinal benefits of cannabis by applying it topically to your skin?

Topicals are cannabis-infused creams are designed to provide localized relief from inflammation when absorbed through the skin. Cannabis topicals come in the form of lotions, creams, and balms; topicals are a prime example of how the cannabis industry is revolutionizing with new and innovative modes of consumption.

Infused balms, lotions, or salves are great to have on hand as they are known to effectively provide relief from localized pain or inflammation.

Topicals do not get you high, so they’re great to use at all times of the day.

How Do Cannabis Topicals Work?

Cannabis-infused topicals work by interacting with your body’s endocannabinoid system, binding to CB2 receptors in your body. Your CB2 receptors are then activated by cannabis compounds (cannabinoids) like THC and CBD, which help reduce pain, inflammation, and irritation.

Because they are non-intoxicating, they are often recommended to those who want to experience the medicinal benefits of cannabis without getting high. Even if a topical contains the ingredient THC (the psychoactive component in cannabis), you will not experience any psychoactive effects when you apply it to your skin.

Unlike smoking and orally ingesting cannabis, the THC from topicals can’t be delivered to the bloodstream. Instead, they only penetrate through the system of CB2 receptors. THC needs to enter the bloodstream for you to feel the high that you would feel from smoking and eating cannabis.

Therapeutic Usage

Topicals are just like other skin and body care products, however, oftentimes topicals are only applied to areas that experience pain or irritation. They are also popular for those who experience muscle soreness and tension, or inflammation.

Cannabis within itself is known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, making topicals perfect for surface-oriented pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, eczema, and psoriasis.

Other conditions that topicals can help relieve:

  • Rashes

  • General inflammation

  • Carpal tunnel

  • Irregular cell growth (i.e., Cancer)

Topicals are also great for muscle pain and soreness associated with strenuous activities such as exercise and general labor, making them great for everyday use as well.

A Transdermal Patch is another form of cannabis-infused topicals but this type of product can produce psychoactive effects. Transdermal patches are medicated adhesives that are placed on the skin, they deliver a specific dose of cannabis through the skin and into the bloodstream.

Do-It-Yourself Cannabis Topical

The ingredients in cannabis topicals are similar to the ones you’ll find in regular skin and body care products. It’s even possible to make your own cannabis-infused topical or salve. If you’ve ever made your own cannabis-infused oil or butter, the process is fairly similar.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Ground, dried cannabis flower

  • Coconut oil

  • Beeswax

  • Your choice of essential oils

Now for making the cannabis topicals:

  • The first step is to decarboxylate your cannabis. You can do this by baking ground-up flower in the oven for 25-30 minutes at 240 degrees Fahrenheit. For this recipe, 7-10 grams of cannabis is recommended.

  • Place 1 ½ cups of coconut oil in a saucepan and stir over low heat until melted.

  • Combine your decarboxylated cannabis and mix it into the melted coconut oil under low heat for 20 to 25 minutes.

  • Remove from heat and pour your mixture through a strainer or cheesecloth and set aside.

  • In the same saucepan, melt the beeswax. As it’s melting, slowly add your infused coconut oil. During this step, you can add in your essential oil of choice (a few drops is enough). Popular oils include lavender, tea tree oil, and peppermint.

  • Once the beeswax and infused coconut oil are thoroughly mixed, remove from heat and transfer it into a jar or container of your choice.

Remember to keep the heat low when using a saucepan or you risk burning off the THC, decreasing your product’s potency.
